mg measures ingredient mass; mL measures liquid volume. Interpreting volume requires the exact concentration, and syringe units are not the same as medicine milligrams. Do not copy another product's chart or switch Wegovy and Mounjaro at the same number of mg.
Read the unit beside the number
Separate the prescribed dose, solution concentration and total container contents. The amount printed for a whole pen is not necessarily one dose. US Wegovy instructions distinguish single-dose and multidose devices.[2]
| Unit | Meaning |
|---|---|
| mg | Mass of the medicine ingredient |
| mL | Volume of liquid |
| mg/mL | Ingredient amount in 1 mL of liquid |

What if the concentration differs but the volume is the same?
The same volume can contain different amounts at different concentrations. FDA reports describe errors involving compounded semaglutide, confusion between mg, mL and units, and varying concentrations. Ask a pharmacist to confirm the volume represented by your syringe markings too.[1]
Wegovy and Mounjaro milligrams are not equivalent doses
Wegovy contains semaglutide; Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, with a different dosing schedule.[2][3] Equal numbers do not establish equal effects or interchangeability. A prescriber must assess the last dose, response and symptoms when planning a switch.
What to bring to the pharmacy
Show the box, label, prescription and device together. Ask: 'What ingredient amount is prescribed?', 'Which marking matches this concentration and device?', and 'What changes after a treatment gap or product change?' This article is not a syringe calculator or restart schedule.

Frequently asked questions
Is there one mL chart for every GLP-1 medicine?
A chart without the exact product, concentration and device cannot be applied. An internet chart does not replace your prescription.
Are pen clicks and syringe units the same?
No. Do not treat markings from different devices as interchangeable units. Check the leaflet for your product and ask a pharmacist.
